Adams State’s nonprofit community based and student run radio station, KASF 90.9 FM connected with ASC campus’s Gingerbread Daycare center to host the first annual Harvest Celebration, to give local children a chance to play games and celebrate the holiday season.  The Nov. 17 event, organized by KASF members and DJs aimed to connect with the larger community.  “KASF is in the process of reformatting the station, and has a part of that we want to put ourselves out in the community, showing our support for local institutions and events,” said Rita Mays, general manager of KASF.
The event hosted children’s activities and games such as duck- duck- goose, musical chairs, and Simon says.  Music and dancing was a popular activity as well, the children were able to choose their favorite music and dance without restrictions.   As a display of gratitude, KASF DJs distributed gifts and candy to all the children in attendance.  The energetic children who participated in the event were relieved to get a break from their normal classroom routines.  Teachers at the Gingerbread house were equally relived to have help from the KASF DJs who kept the children engaged throughout the afternoon.
Despite the obvious age gap, interaction between the DJs and the children was effective in creating a relaxed atmosphere in which the children did not feel uncomfortable.  “I feel like the kids were happy to see some young adults taking time to really interact with them,” said Mays.   Teachers at Gingerbread daycare center also noted the ease in which the children accepted the DJs in their games and activities.
KASF hopes to make this event an annual occurrence which could expand to encompass more Alamosa preschools and daycares.  According to Mays, depending on what kind of support KASF receives from the school, they would like to make this event for the entire community in order to promote the radio station on a much larger scale.
The Harvest Celebration was the second KASF hosted event of the year, after the chili cook-off which took place on Sept. 20.  Future KASF sponsored events consist of a tentative re-launching party which will celebrate the reformatting of the station.  “The main goal of KASF is to reformat the station and at the same time reach out to the community to increase our listenership, we are creating a new KASF logo and hope to have live streaming radio by the end of this year,” said Mays.
Since its humble beginnings in 1964, KASF has managed to grow into a full time radio station which is broadcasting seven days a week, twenty-four hours a day and has a musically diverse lineup of shows hosted by students.   The future of KASF will focus on more community events like the Harvest Celebration and is working to become more technologically advanced.  KASF would like to see a substantial increase in their ratings, so they can know that people in the Valley are tuning in to the campus voice.
