The help keep Milagros on Main Street project has been transpiring for about two months now. The wider community of caffeine drinkers, volunteer groups, and passer-bys have come together to raise approximately $12,000 dollars at the hands of over 200 donors, and the project is not over yet. We have about two weeks left before the grant to the Colorado State Historical Society is due and we need your help to reach our goal of 250 donors to demonstrate community support for the grant. Milagros is applying for a grant to help cover some of the cost of the building, but we still need to raise more. Our goal is to fundraise $35,000 to offset the remaining cost for the space.
The Milagros coffeehouse moved into the Emperius Building in 2000. Over the years the space has become a community center where folks gather for meetings, lunch breaks, afternoon reads, and much more. Milagros hosts local art, two open mics a month for local musicians and writers, free documentary nights, and they always encourage live music through a piano and a sign above it that invites people to play for free coffee. Every dollar spent at Milagros supports La Puente, a local charity.
Our lease is up at the end of the month and the current owner is selling the building. Milagros is hoping to purchase the property so we can keep the corner of State Avenue and Main Street as our permanent home. If we don’t buy the space we will have to move and we would like stay where we are–in the heart of Alamosa.
We have seen a tremendous amount of support already from the wider community. People from across the country have donated or left words of support for the project. To show our appreciation each week a name is drawn at random from the donation envelopes to receive a free drink from Milagros. We also do a monthly drawing for our online donors to receive free Milagros merchandise.
Every donor and every dollar brings us one step closer to reaching our goal. Milagros would like to give special recognition to all of the donors who have given not only their money but time and energy.
