OGDEN, Utah – Playing their second exhibition contest in as many nights, the Adams State women’s basketball team shot just 26.5 percent from the field on Friday night in a 60-42 loss against Weber State.
ASC also fell in an exhibition game against Southern Utah University in Cedar City on Friday, and concludes its tune-up portion of the schedule with an 0-2 mark. The Grizzlies also played an exhibition match against the Wildcats prior to the start of last season, falling 57-38.
A sluggish start in which the Grizzlies hit just 6-of-27 shots (22.2 percent) in the first half led to a 32-18 halftime lead Weber State. Despite hitting just seven field goals in the first half themselves, the Wildcats found their way to the free throw line often and went 16-for-21.
ASC trailed 30-11 with under three minutes left in the opening half, but ended the first with a 7-2 run to cut the lead.
Junior Deanna Reich (Mesa, Ariz.) began the run, and freshman Morgan Fitterer (Lake Elsinore, Calif.) added on with one of her two 3-pointers in the game before a pair of Keyondra White (Sierra Vista, Ariz.) concluded the first half scoring.
The Grizzlies played a stronger second half, shooting 31.8 percent on 7-of-22 from the field, but were unable to cut into the lead, as the Wildcats also picked up their shooting and hit 12-of-35 in the final 20 minutes.
Adams State hit 87.5 percent (14-of-16) of their free throw attempts, and were led by senior Chloe Cable (Mesa, Ariz.), who scored a game-high 12 points thanks in large part to going 8-of-9 from the charity stripe.
Fitterer and Reich each chipped in with eight points for ASC, while redshirt-freshman Caitlin Boal (Albuqueruqe, N.M.) put up six.
Cable added nine rebounds and ended just one board shy of a double-double, while Reich grabbed eight rebounds.
With the exhibition season wrapped up, the Grizzlies will next return to action for a match-up with Oklahoma Panhandle State on Saturday, Nov. 12. The Aggies were picked to finish seventh in the Heartland Conference Preseason Poll.
The Grizzlies last faced OPSU during the 2009 Adams State Bankers Classic, where ASC scored an 89-42 victory.
ASC fans can catch a radio broadcast of the 4 p.m. match-up at www.kspk.com (104.1 FM in Alamosa).
