Del Norte High School Students Test Out the ASU HPPE Performance Lab

ALAMOSA (April 21) – Students gather around the treadmill, as Joseph Archuleta starts out with a quick pace that soon develops into a slow jog. The Del Norte High School students were introduced to the Adams State University Human Performance Lab, on April 9. A junior, Archuleta was chosen as the subject to be fitted with the gear and work out while his classmates periodically checked his heart rate and lactate levels.
Clint Mondragon, Adams State alumnus ’00, planned the field trip for his Intro to Kinesiology/Physiology students. “It is a very basic class that hopefully introduces students to the world of human performance.” The high school students study human anatomy, kinesiology, exercise physiology, nutrition, and care and prevention of injuries.
Adams State graduate assistant Maria Martinez demonstrated the VO2 max test and allowed the students to experience hands-on how the test works. “She really got them excited about college and specifically human performance,” Mondragon said. Along with the Human Performance Lab demonstration, Mondragon’s students were shown the Strength Lab and Biomechanics Lab. “We were able to take what we have learned in the classroom and apply them in a real world setting,” he added.
Mondragon appreciates the willingness of the Human Performance and Physical Education Department to host his students. “It really showed my students that they could have this at their fingertips and not have to travel far from home.”
