Athlete of the Week: December 1

Grizzly junior women’s XC runner Alicia Nelson (Craig, Colo.) has been named the ASCGrizzlies.com Athlete of the Week for the week ending Nov. 21.
Nelson was Adams State’s top finisher at the NCAA Division II National Championships on Saturday, Nov. 19 in at the Plantes Ferry Sports Complex in Spokane, Wash.
Nelson finished in second place overall, covering the 6k course in a time of 21 minutes, 7.4 seconds. Her runner-up finish was the best individual Grizzly finish since 2002, and led ASC to a fourth place team finish. Nelson earned her third U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches’ Association (USTFCCCA) All-American XC accolades with the finish, and was the top Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) finisher among the women’s field.
Nelson was the top pick among the media members, all but one of which picked her for first, while she finished second in the on-line fan poll with 37.2 percent of the 452 votes cast.
This week’s other nominees for ASCGrizzlies.com Athlete of the Week included senior men’s XC runner Matt Bond (Worcester, England), senior women’s basketball player Chloe Cable (Glendale, Ariz.), senior men’s basketball player Deray Wilson (Anchorage, Alaska), freshman swimmers Maggie Morris (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Nick Mankus (Keller, Texas), as well as sophomore wrestler Daniel Kelly (Parker, Colo.)
