An Open Mic For Creative Expression

On Sunday, the POET club held an open mic night that drew a diverse group of students looking for inspiration. It was a fun night of creative expression, where those that went up had a chance to share their experiences with others who were there to listen. Poems are the creative language used to express an emotion. The true poetry is in the lives that we live. It’s in the moments that we share and in the people that we surround ourselves with.
The POET club open mic nights have been held in the Student Life Center since last semester, when the club was first started. On Sunday nights at 6, true ‘student life’ occurs when we come together to forge inspirational memories. As Vice President of POET club, I’ve seen it grow from just an idea in conversation, to a center for creativity on campus. What I like most is the chance we have to collaborate with so many other clubs and departments on campus. I’ve met a lot of different people I wouldn’t have if I wasn’t in the POET club.
The open mic night is just one of many events that are held by the POET club. We host our own radio show on Monday and Thursday nights, playing Hip-Hop, Trap, EDM and other genres by request. It can be live streamed on krza.org. Also, we meet on Wednesdays for writing workshops that aim to improve our written expression by providing positive feedback for each other. And on Fridays, we have lunch lectures at noon in the Student Life Center called POET Club Consejos.
I’m really excited to be involved with something on campus that keeps me motivated and inspired to help others. As a psychology major, I want to specialize in mental health. Poetry has long been known for having therapeutic effects, and I can’t deny that the open mic nights are a place for me to find my balance. I don’t feel as stressed by school while I’m at the open mic, or while I’m writing about the things in my life that I’m living through. It’s a relief to have an outlet that helps me so much.
Every Sunday for the rest of the semester, the POET club will be in the Student Life Center, playing good music and creating good vibes. We think that’s what life’s all about, and encourage anyone who feels the same to come to the next event. We’re a club that thrives on creativity and collaboration. We’re waiting to be inspired by the next artist we haven’t yet met, so make sure you find us!
