ALAMOSA (September 5) – The Adams State University Theatre Program opens it 2013-2014 season with Getting Out directed by Jenna Neilsen, Associate Professor of Theatre. The play, by Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Marsha Norman, runs September 20, 21, 27, and 28 at 7:30 p.m. There will be a Sunday matinee on September 29 at 2 p.m. Tickets go on sale Monday, September 9th. This powerful drama follows the character Arlene as she is released from prison and seeks to start her life over. Along the way, we meet the guards and prison officials with whom she waged a running battle, the unfeeling, abusive mother, the lecherous former prison guard, the pimp ex-boyfriend, and the friendly neighbor with whom she interacts. Ultimately the play, like life, offers no simple answers-but it conveys, with heartrending honesty and compassion, the struggle of someone fighting for her life against incredible odds.“ Though written in 1979, little has changed in terms of the uphill battle a convict faces when re-integrating into society,” said Neilsen. “Can Arlene beat the odds and live a better life on the outside? This play puts a personal face on the very real plight of those released from prison today.”For the opening night performance on September 20, a section of the seats are being sold as a benefit for the Center for Restorative Programs. With Getting Out, Adams State University kicks off its 87th year of theatre, followed by a season of works that offers something for everyone, including a holiday season production of Sleeping Beauty and a spring semester production of S.E. Hinton’s classic coming of age story The Outsiders. If audience members want to see all three faculty directed productions, including the popular holiday show, they can order the Subscriber Series plan at a reduced price of $25. With season tickets, audiences receive a discount off 2013-2014 ticket prices and are able to pre-order additional tickets for the holiday show before the box office opens to the general public. Getting Out is rated “R” for mature language and content. Individual tickets are $10 for general public, $8 for seniors and students, and free to Associated Students and Faculty with current ASU identification.
