Many Grizzly fans watched the Third Annual Alumni scrimmage that took place this past Saturday evening in Plachy Hall as the Adams State College volleyball team began their 2010 campaign with some fun.
The alumni team consisted of 12 players from past Grizzly teams as far back as 1997. This team of alumni not only got to renew old friendships with past teammates but they also helped prepare the 2010 ASC volleyball team for their season opening tournament which will be in Omaha, Nebraska.
The 2010 Grizzly volleyball team also planned a brunch that day in the Dr. Joe I. Vigil Hall of Fame Room free to all participating alumni, who also attended the season opener for the Grizzly football team in the Rex Stadium.
The Grizzlies have been picked to finish third in the West Division and eighth overall according to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll, released earlier in August.
The Grizzlies, who return seven letterwinners and five starters from last year’s team that advanced to the 8-team RMAC Tournament for the third straight year, received 98 points in the polling of the conference’s 14 head coaches who each ranked the opposition 1-13 without voting for their own squad.
The team’s first home game will be October 1 in Plachy Hall at 7 p.m. when the Grizzlies will take on archrival Western State.
The Grizzly tough schedule includes four nationally-ranked teams, a group that also includes No. 9 Minnesota-Duluth, No. 10 Metro State, and No. 13 Nebraska-Kearney.
In addition to the varsity squad, Adams State is starting up a junior varsity volleyball program that is scheduled to start playing later on this season.
