Approximately 125 ASC faculty, staff and students participated in and supported the 61st SLV Regional Science Fair, held on campus in mid-March. According the Science Fair Director, Lucy Adams, 378 valley students participated with 350 projects. Valley winners did very well at the Colorado State Science and Engineering Fair. San Luis Valley students ranked third in percent of total state awards, after only the Boulder Valley and Pikes Peak regions.
Margaret Doell, professor and chair of art, will be the featured artist in “Gallery in the Park” in Altona, Manitoba, Canada, from May 14 through mid-July. This solo exhibition features lithographs and photographs from the past 20 years. “Gallery in the Park’ is southern Manitoba’s premiere exhibition space. Donna Griego, program assistant in the Office of the Provost and Academic Affairs, attended the 6th annual Texas Diversity & Leadership Conference, April 6-10. She said she returned with two key concepts:
“Education is key to our success” and “Now is the time to create our opportunities.”
With the theme “Passion for Diversity,” the conference focused on learning to value people who are different, and bringing diverse voices together to be heard. Sessions highlighted a myriad of topics, including mentoring, implementing/managing diversity and equity, professional development, thinking strategically, leadership competencies, and effectively managing teams. The event also included a multicultural summit, a dialogue on issues of gender, race, ethnicity, and sexual orientation. Dyamic keynote speakers were Dr. Cornell West, professor at Princeton University, and Donna Brazile, veteran Democratic political strategist and syndicated columnist.
Dr. David Mazel , professor of English, assumed chairmanship of the Department of English, Theatre and Communication in January. Former chair Dr. Carol Guerrero-Murphy continues on the faculty.
Dr. Tracey Robinson, associate professor of HPPE, and Ben Kern, strength & conditioning coach, will have their paper, “Effects of beta-alanine supplementation on performance and body composition in collegiate wrestlers and football players” published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning R esearch.
