As the leaves are gradually changing colors, the temperatures are gradually dropping, and as students are flocking back to campus, what is being symbolized? Saturdays are filled with the excitement of early morning Cross-Country meets and tailgating for football games. Nights are taken up by what is supposed to be studying and getting back into the normal routine of being a college student. This season is one of the most beautiful seasons that can be found within the San Luis Valley, and it is autumn. Could there be a difference between a regular autumn and an Adam’s autumn?
One of the best ways to spend the beautiful San Luis Valley autumn would be with the Adam’s State Adventure Program. The amazing area that surrounds Alamosa with its many outdoor attractions is one of the many perks to the college campus. With the Hooper Hot Springs, Great Sand Dunes, Mt. Blanca, Rio Grande River, and Zapata Falls just miles away, what leaves any student to claim boredom?
The adventure program integrates a spirit of adventure within the student. Many activities can be found in the program; kayaking clinics, the climbing rock wall in the Rex Center, hiking day trips, or weekend treks up the mountains. High levels of expertise are found within the adventure program. Not only are students getting away from the college life for a short period of time, but gaining an experience that cannot be found everywhere.
Autumn also marks the opening of cross-country and football season. The Grizzlies cross-country team towed the line at the home invite this weekend. The team would be taking on the defending national champions and arch nemesis, Western State College. The Grizzly Harriers showed their current fitness by scoring a fantastic nineteen points. Western State finished second with forty-one points. Freshman Kevin Batt led the team with a first place finish over all, followed by Sophomore Tabor Stevens in second, Junior Geo Godinez in third, Senior David Sanchez in fifth, and Sophomore Matt Daniels finishing it for the team in eight place.
The Grizzly football team demolished NAIA Wayland Baptist this past Saturday 55-7. This is the Bulldog’s first season back on the field in many years and it was met by a rude awakening led by quarterback Cody Davies 287 passing yards and three touchdowns. Next weekend, the football team will be traveling to Gunnison in attempt to follow the same footsteps that the Cross-Country team put into place on a win over the Mountaineers at the Joe I. Vigil Invitational.
No matter if it is sports, academics or outdoor activities, autumn is filled with activities that can keep the student busy! Take advantage of it now, because old grandpa winter will be coming in shortly, and according to “The Farmer’s Almanac” states to prepare for a winter that will be on the fierce side. Explore the beautiful mountains, go swimming in the springs, or go on a jog along the dikes of the Rio Grande.
