Matthew Basinger was chosen as the Paw Print’s Scholar of the Week. Basinger was nominated by Dr. Grace Young, Professor of Sociology.. When asked about Basinger, Young responds with very positive feedback as to why she nominated him.
“He is very goal-oriented, and he participates in an insightful manner in the classroom. He is very respectful of other people’s opinions, excels academically, and his career goal is to be a social worker. He will make an excellent contribution to a Master’s in a social work program. He will be an empathetic social worker.”
She indicates that Basinger is taking two of the most important courses he can take from Adams State, a senior capstone of Sociological Research Methods, and an internship in social welfare. This internship is being done at the Department of Human Services here in Alamosa.
Basinger is majoring in sociology with an emphasis in social welfare and criminology. His minor is in government. He is very academically oriented and his GPA of a 3.3 indicates this. He enjoys Young’s and Dr. Martin’s courses the most, because they emphasize what interests him most as a student.
Basinger plans to graduate in December of 2012. His extracurricular is Pi Sigma Alpha and he is thoroughly enjoying it. He enjoys reading and traveling. Basinger  started traveling for family, but ended up enjoying it and making it a hobby.
Speaking of his college experience Basinger said “So far, so good, It keeps me busy and I’m enjoying it. College is definitely worth it, and it is worth the education.” Basinger is a prime example of being a student and enjoying college for what it has to offer.
