ASU Softball: Momentum May Be Coming

By Noah Schafer

The Adams State Grizzly Softball team was back in action this last weekend as they took on the Metro State Roadrunners. In what was supposed to be a four-game contest turned into just a two-game battle. This shortened battle favored the visiting Roadrunners as they took both games this last Saturday. The Grizzlies found it hard to muster any offense in either game, losing the first by a score of 9-1 and also losing the second 12-4. The Grizzlies’ only run in the first game came in the bottom of the third inning when Micciulli doubled to left field, scoring Lange who had doubled the at-bat before. Micciulli was unable to score and left on base. The second game proved a little more fruitful for the Grizzlies offensively. They managed to put up four runs, the first of which came in the bottom of the first when Micciulli crossed the plate after walking and being picked up with another hit and an RBI groundout from her teammates, Haskins and Fryar. The Grizzlies second run came in the bottom of the second when Lange crushed a homer in to center field. The third run came in the bottom of the third when Wood smashed a double to score Munn, who did the same two at-bats before. The fourth and last run came in the bottom of the fifth when Haskins placed a single down the right field line, scoring Micciulli who doubled to lead off the inning.

This improved offense in the second game was enough as the Roadrunners put up 12 runs. This season has not been the one the Grizzlies have hoped for, as the two-game loss this last Saturday puts their overall record to 6-27 and their RMAC record at 6-15. There is still time for the Grizzlies softball team to turn their season around as they have 22 games left in the season, many of which are RMAC games. If the Grizzlies can go on a run during this last half of the season they may be able to improve their record to above .500. If the Adams State Softball team can do this, their chances of a postseason berth become more and more likely. With the momentum that the Grizzlies could build in their last stretch of games, a playoff berth could mean big trouble for the rest of the RMAC conference. To see the possible start of a postseason push, one can see the Adams State Grizzly softball team as their next games will be Saturday through Sunday. The team will be traveling to New Mexico Highlands University for a pair of double headers and some much needed wins.
